Nearby, the gears spin on a secret device, setting in motion a chain reaction that could avert a civilization-ending cataclysm. Known only to a select few, the machine must be protected.

Amazon is a great platform for new or relatively unknown authors to get their work ‘out there.’ Unfortunately such a large sounding board often swallows books and keeps great novels, and authors, from being highlighted the way they should be. Such is the case with “Cold Trap.” This book really is a diamond in the rough, which is rather an apropos description considering the precious metal hunting on the lunar surface.Dr. Sejkin Nharvai, Sej, has been offered the placement of a lifetime. He has convinced Lester Kepple, a billionaire who made his fortune with the advent and creation of the world’s first truly realized quantum Computer, The Cube, to take a risk and invest in a new way to find precious metals on the lunar surface. Unity, the lunar station, will be his home away from home – except while there he disappears in crater 6L43A, in the Cold Trap, an area at the bottom of a lunar crater that NEVER sees sunlight. Dr. Ogden Rowley, recently back from Unity on his own mission is sent back to assist the team and try to locate his college and friend. Along the way, the author introduces us to many characters, including Moochy, whose love affair with Sej plays a pivotal role, and the rest of the lunar team, most with deep back stories that, while not always pertaining to the tale, are interesting.
Jon Waskan has composed a novel that reads like a movie, it plays out in your head with vivid detail and amazing cinematography. Hollywood, take note – this really could be a blockbuster, especially if the casting director chooses the right people to play Ogden Rowley and Dr. Moichera, Moochy. Considering the overwhelming recent success of “Gravity” adapting this expansive novel to film should pose no problem. Dancing between Science-Fiction and intrigue, not to some action, this story pulls you in and leaves you guessing. Things are not quite what they appear.
A great read for Sci-Fi, Space and mystery fans.

Cold Trap eBook Jon Waskan Reviews
Cold Trap bears none of the hallmarks of a writer’s first novel; on the contrary, this title is as polished and engaging as any seasoned author’s. As a fellow author (and former university professor) with admittedly high standards, I’m glad I took a chance on reading Jon Waskan’s premier novel. He is truly a first-rate writer. Even if you don’t subscribe to the rather outlandish proposition that extraterrestrial life-forms jump-started the evolutionary process on earth (this is science fiction, after all, as is evolution as a whole), there is plenty of sound astrophysics in this outstanding novel. Though I’m no expert on lunar colonization, Mr. Waskan has evidently thoroughly researched the subject, along with various cultures and foreign accents, the inner workings of the scientific community and national/international politics, and most importantly, the unique challenges of living and working in a low-gravity, zero-atmosphere environment. His plot and character development kept me in suspense until the very end, where he deftly finessed the eminently satisfying denouement I had hoped for and left me keen to read more of his works. And yes, Jon (if I may address you personally), you should publish multiple sequels to Cold Trap! You’re a very fine writer, and it would be a tragedy not to chronicle the further adventures of your characters. I’ll look forward to your next novel! (By the way, I also worked at the U. of I. years ago, and I enjoy writing about trees in my fantasy series.)
I’ve always been intrigued by the Moon and the stories set on our natural satellite, so when I came across this novel, which is also very cheap, I couldn’t hold my index finger and in less than a minute it was already in my . And I can say it was one of the best purchases made in the recent years, concerning books.
The story is set in the near future in the lunar South Pole, where a research base was created in the vicinity of the so-called “cold traps”, i.e. those impact craters whose bottom, being at very high latitudes, doesn’t receive the solar rays since when they exist and in which water ice is trapped, mixed with regolith and other materials, including some rare elements of considerable economic interest.
The author skilfully blends a plausible science, very accurate in the details, with the evocative settings, shown through the senses of the characters, which in turn are well developed and realistic. The impression of being on the lunar ground during the reading is real. And so are the emotions of the protagonists during the daring scenes full of action and suspense. In other words, this book has everything I look for in a hard science fiction novel.
I read it in a few days and I was so taken by the story that I was looking forward to getting in bed with my to continue reading.
The story ends with a great plot twist, although I had expected it, but I liked even the fact of seeing it arrive because of its perfect logic within the plot and the smart way in which the author has orchestrated the various clues that have led me to predict it.
If I have to indicate a defect, but it isn’t going to affect my final judgment, I must say that I would have preferred that the flashbacks related to the character of Moochy were shorter and interspersed with the main line of the narrative. Instead they are placed practically in the middle of story, breaking completely the action to tell the story of Moochy, threatening to make you forget the details of the main plot and pushing the plot itself away from science fiction.
Despite this, I can only judge it as a great debut novel.
