The book was carefully detailed but included a lot of information that might be of interest only to direct descendants of those mentioned. It did point out, however, how many deaths resulted from nutrition and disease problems that were unrelated to battle, an important fact related to the total casualty count of the war. Very short on political information regarding the war itself.Of particular interest to Minnesota citizens were the accounts of troop movement and encounters during the Sioux Uprising.

History of Company E of the Sixth Minnesota Regiment of Volunteer Infantry A J Alfred James Hill 9783847212560 Books Reviews
Excellent read.
Good read.
The 6th Minnesota spent much of their time chasing Native America groups. An interesting aspect of the period that seldom gets mentioned.
The author of this book has written a very readable account of his service during the civil war. It might help to have a map of Minnesota and the Dakotas handy when he relates the campaigns against the indians. Most histories of the Civil war dwell on the big picture. It is refreshing to have a common soldier give his account of the war from his perspective.
A good read that is most interesting for its first hand accounts of the Union campaigns against the Sioux during the Civil War. This regiment spent its first years of service campaigning against Indians in Minnesota and Dakota. This is a unique account of a generally forgotten theater of the war. Eventually the regiment moves south and is eventually present at the Battle of Blakely in Alabama, but does not see combat.
The book was carefully detailed but included a lot of information that might be of interest only to direct descendants of those mentioned. It did point out, however, how many deaths resulted from nutrition and disease problems that were unrelated to battle, an important fact related to the total casualty count of the war. Very short on political information regarding the war itself.
